When Am I Ovulating? - Getting To Know Your Cycles

Unless you already have a pretty good understanding of your monthly cycles, you may sometimes ask yourself: when am I ovulating?  You may be trying to get pregnant, or you might be trying to avoid pregnancy.  Either way, knowing the changes that occur in your body throughout your cycles to be able to predict when you are fertile will be beneficial to you.  Since every woman is different, there is no easy answer to the question of when you are ovulating, but there are some physical symptoms you can learn to recognize and there are methods that can give you a very accurate picture of if/when you ovulate each cycle.  The best way to determine your ovulation is actually by using a combination of methods - charting your cycles, studying your cervical fluid, tracking your basal body temperature, and noting other physical symptoms like ovulation cramps and increased sex drive.  There are also fertility monitors that can assist you.

At what point in my cycle am I fertile?

A very common misconception is that women ovulate on the 14th day of their cycle – with day 1 being the start of your period.  But this is usually not the case.  Some women do ovulate on the 14th day, but many women do not have the typical 28-day cycles that this number is based on.  A normal cycle can be anywhere from 28 to 32 days, with abnormal cycles being shorter or longer.  If you have normal cycles, you can expect to ovulate between day 11 and day 21.  This obviously leaves a wide range of days for you to try to guess when you are fertile, so this alone is not a good predictor to use if you are trying to get pregnant or trying to avoid pregnancy.   A much better method is to become aware of your cycle changes through tracking methods and to start paying attention to the symptoms of ovulation.
