Combination pills for prevention of pregnancy

Many people become sexually active at a very young age, because of which they are unaware of the complications that can occur in the future. In today's society, young people now understand the importance of contraceptive methods such as condoms, and use them adeptly. But at times, because of certain contraceptive accidents such as a condom tear or slip, a woman is likely to become pregnant. Although condoms have been proven to be safer and an effective method for preventing such situations from arising, there are possibilities of mishaps happening. In order to prevent such mishaps from occurring, women can take help of oral contraceptive pills that are available on the market. You need to take these oral contraceptive pills on a daily basis and at the same time

The oral contraceptive pills available consist of artificial female hormones, with the help of which these pills can help you in preventing unplanned pregnancy. Based on the female hormones present in the pills, they can be classified as either combination pills or mini pills. Combination pills consist of both oestrogen and progesterone as its active ingredients. The mini pills, on the other hand, consist of only progesterone, as their active ingredient, which is why it is also referred to as ‘progesterone only pill'. Yasmin is one such popular and widely used combination pill. It has been proven to be almost 100% effective in protecting you against pregnancy. It consists of ethinylestradiol (oestrogen, 30 micrograms) and drospirenone (progesterone, 3 milligrams) as its active ingredient. Being a combination pill, Yasmin gives you a three way protection against pregnancy.

It tricks your body into believing that ovulation has already occurred, in order to prevent ovulation from occurring and an egg from being produced. It then thickens the cervical mucus in your womb, in order to prevent a sperm from entering your womb and fertilizing an egg. Lastly, it alters your womb lining so that an egg, if by any chance released or fertilized, cannot attach itself to the womb and grow. Yasmin, unlike other contraceptive pills, does not lead to weight gain as a side effect. You need to take this pill for 21 days of your menstrual cycle with a 7 day break in between. You are likely to have your periods during these 7 days. Some of the side effects of this pill include headaches, menstrual changes, breast pain, abdominal pain and nausea.

Loestrin is another combination pill, which has been proven to be almost 100% effective in preventing unplanned pregnancy. This combination pill, which is at times also referred to as ‘the pill' is available in the dosage strength of 20 mg and 30 mg. It consists of ethinylestradiol (an artificial oestrogen) and Norethisterone (artificial progesterone) as its active ingredient. You need to take one Loestrin pill on the very first day of your periods for immediate protection, and should be careful to take the pill at the same time on a daily basis. If you take the pill on any other day during your periods, you are required to take extra precautions for the next 7 days, in order to stay completely protected. You need to take the pill for 21 days of your menstrual cycle with a break of 7 days at the end.
