Your one-stop guide to Cerazette

Cerazette is an oestrogen-free contraceptive pill that you can take daily to prevent pregnancy. It contains desogestrel as the active ingredient, in strength of 75mcg. One of the main benefits of progestogen-based pills is that they are well tolerated by women who have heart conditions or are breastfeeding. The risk of blood clot is also lesser with Cerazette than with combined oral contraceptive pills.

How does Cerazette work?

Cerazette pills work almost in the same manner as emergency contraceptive pills do. They can ensure a three-tier security to cut the risk of pregnancy. Desogestrel works primarily by stopping the release of an egg from the ovaries. It also makes the natural mucus at the neck of the womb thicker than normal, thereby preventing sperm to reach the uterus and reducing the likelihood of fertilisation. Cerazette alters the quality of the lining of the womb as well, so as to make sure no fertilised egg can embed itself in the womb.

When should I start taking?

Starting on the first day of your menstrual cycle, you need to take a pill regularly at about the same time. Once your current pack is finished, start with a new pack the very next day and continue as before. When you are on combined oral contraception, you need to take a week's break from pill-taking during your monthly period. But that is not the case with Cerazette pills; you need to take them without any break.
