Is heavy periods during the menopause common and do this cause low haemoglobin and iron levels?
Gertrudis
Heavy periods during the menopause is perfectly normal. And yes this would cause low Hb and aenemia. If blood loss gets excessive get GP to prescribe something that will help with this, or see Gynaecologist with view to a hysterectomy

It is not common. Heavy bleeding always causes anaemia!

It can be but my doctor fitted me with the merena coil. This releases hormones over a five year period. She told me that i can keep having it replaced every five years until i have gone through the change. She said that the hormones that are released in it are helpful with this change in your life and that they help with the effects that happen to you, e.g. hot sweats heavy bleeding, mood swings. Evening primrose oil capsules can help, as well as cranberry tablets that you can buy from any good health shop. My monthly period has gone from being so heavy for days on end to having next to no bleeding at all. I have had mine fitted for the last 3 years, and it has given me a new lease of life. speak to your doctor and get their advise.

I am going through peri-menopause and according to my doctor yes it is normal due to the changes we are going through, during this time hormones fluctuate and mineral levels you can have them tested and generally take what you are short in, which will in turn help all those symptoms of menopause, i am currently taking progesterone cream, vitamins, a, d,c, e,and Iodoral, dhea, and truly this had made a world of difference for me. I also highly recommend Suzanne Sommers book "Ageless". Which really goes in depth about all of this. Best of Luck.
