Menopause is the term used to describe a period in a woman's life that the ovaries stop producing the egg cells needed to reproduce and the end of the menstrual period on a permanent basis. Estrogen production from the ovaries is decreased at this point, and so many women suffer from its decreased levels. This period occurs in women who usually are in their 50's, although there are cases when climacteric happens at an earlier age. There are a lot of symptoms associated with this condition, and these include hot flashes, irritability, mood swings, and vaginal dryness. Varying treatments for these symptoms are available, and a few of them are discussed in this article.
Hormone Replacement Therapy or HRT is considered the most popular and the most effective means of treating menopause symptoms. The procedure, from the term itself, involves replacing the hormones lost during the menopausal period. Estrogen and sometimes progesterone pills, patches, and sprays are used to replace the lost hormones in a woman's body, allowing them to get relief from the symptoms. There are studies however that have found certain risks associated to the use of hormone replacement therapy such as higher chances of acquiring heart conditions and cancer.
Treatments that are applied directly to the vagina to relieve the symptoms of menopause are also available. Some of these are estrogen rings, estrogen tablets, and estrogen creams. When applied to the vaginal area, these products reduce vaginal dryness and eliminate vaginal bleeding in some instances.
Hot flashes in women suffering from this stage are a common occurrence, and as such should be treated properly. There are medications that one can take to control these flashes, and these have been proven successful in helping women lead normal lives during the menopausal period. Acupuncture and yoga are some activities that menopausal women can try to alleviate hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause, and although these have not been medically proven, a lot of women who have tried them claim their effectiveness.
Above all these treatments however is the need to engage in exercise activities and having a healthy diet. Studies have shown that symptoms related to the end of woman's monthly cycle can be dramatically reduced with the proper amount of exercise and a change in lifestyle. Although menopause is a natural process that all women undergo in their lives, it is not something to be complacent about as symptoms of the menopausal period can affect one's overall health and emotional and psychological well-being.
