Are Bio-Identical Hormones for You? Alternative Medicine and Traditional Medicine

When it comes to talking about Bio-identical hormones, alternative medicine and traditional medicine will incessantly disagree. It seems there will always be mud-slinging going on between the two opposing ways of treating the symptoms in the media. For those that believe in the results of non-traditional medicine, the controversy isn't an issue. This group knows their bodies and what works for them. They are not trying to sell anyone on anything. It is personal. It works for them.

Many baby-boomers have chosen alternative ways to live a better, longer and more productive life. The routes they have followed from the main path are as varied as they are. This, indeed, is the beauty of the human spirit and the people that live to their greatest potential. It is also the wonderful part of bio-identical hormones. They are made for you as an individual, not for the masses. An individualized medicine, imagine that! Yes, the cream contents are based somewhat on your test results but mostly, they should be based on your symptoms and when your symptoms are relieved, you are the best person you can be. Both the doctor and the patient are listening, talking, and staying in tuned with each other. How many traditional doctors do that with their patients?

We all went through the hormones 101 class on how your body works. We are educated people in the sense that if something the doctor says doesn't make any sense for us, we question it and if we can't get an answer we are comfortable with, we find an answer that does make sense. We no longer believe, as most of our parents do, that doctors are gods and know everything. We are familiar with our own bodies well enough to know that if something isn't working, we need to try an alternative. There isn't a medicine out there, whether traditional or alternative that works for everyone in the same manner. If it doesn't work for you, move on to another form. You should always know what your next step is if something doesn't/isn't working for you.

The world has many true believers in the appropriate use of bio-identical hormones and know first- hand their power to help women that choose this alternative. That being said, I do believe that everyone does need to know and understand the pros and cons of anything they put in or on their bodies. One thing you must do is educate yourself. You can help yourself live a better life just using a few of the following:

Hopefully you have a doctor and are not afraid to challenge them when things don't make sense for you.

Your well being depends on friends that support you, not enable you.

Removing large stressors from your life is crucial to a happy healthy life. Learn to use stress to motivate and solve issues instead of creating them. We can sometimes be our own worst enemy.

The credibility of traditional medicine is lacking when it comes to female hormones. Anyone using a naturopath doctor or thinking of taking bio-identical hormones knows that already. We all know that hormones decline with age. We accept that. Do we need the same hormone levels as someone of a lot younger age? No, we don't. Taking hormones of any kind can have unpredictable effects on a body that may have no receptors. No one, I repeat, no one can tell you how your body will react to any particular hormone. Anyone can have good or not so good results and with anything medicinal, that can change at any time. Taking the time to pay attention to how your body feels everyday is something that may be foreign to many of us but it is crucial to you when you are taking anything new, supplements, cream, drops or prescription drugs.

Everyone must decide for themselves. The wonderful part of all this is that we have many choices and one or a combination may work for you. The hard part will be having the patience to try them and waiting for the results. Supplements take time to get into your system...it would only make sense that most things "natural" don't work overnight. With bio-identical hormones, you should see signs within your first week to ten days since it doesn't have to pass through the body's natural filtering system. With prescription drugs results are seen quicker and so are the side effects.
